Rome

This is a postcard I got at the Vatican. It shows the Vatican, Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, and the Coliseum; all things that we saw in Rome.
We all got coins to throw into Trevi fountain.
Waiting in line at the Basilica.
One of the domes inside the Basilica.
More grandeur.
Standing in front of some carved wood in St. Peter's Basilica.
In the square before we got into line to go inside.
The Swiss guard.
In Vatican City, built over the tomb of St Peter.
Tonya and I thought we'd slip in and confess. (Notice we had extra-ordinary sins and not minor ones!)

Michelangelo's Pieta: he was 24 years old when he finished it.
Roman Forum.
In front of the Coliseum.

Inside the Coliseum.More ancient ruins.
Monument to Victor Emmanuel in Piazza Venezia.
Looking at Vatican City.

Tiber River bridge

Bridge by Castel St. Angelo.
Castel St Angelo; it started out as a tomb and became a fortress.

Piazza Navonna.

Sulphur pits

Taking our shoes and socks off to get ready to go in the sulphur bath.
It was a cool and windy day but the pit was warm, especially when you get close to a vent.
Some of the vent bubbles.
Oozy and gooey mud.
AAHH!
It was slippery walking around and we didn't want to get our clothes sticky and muddy.
Jeff laughing at us.
Some of the mud.
We are standing near a vent and the little pin holes could really burn the soles of our feet. Ouch!
It really stinks but it is fun!
Cleaning our feet off in the water.

Putting our shoes back on. Phew!

Vulcano Island

The fast boat ferry that took us to the Islands.
It was a lot rougher than the other boats we went on but it went pretty fast!
Our first glimpse of the island.
A stall on the side of the road. Tonya was eyeing the fruits:)
Jeff was going to sit with our luggage while we walked up the volcano but the ticket seller said we could keep our bags in his office until he opened it again at 6pm and we got our ferry at 6:30pm.
The sign to the volcano trail.
The dock at Vulcano.
Dinner after we hiked the volcano. It didn't taste very good but I was so hungry I inhaled in.
Starting on the trail.
A view of the city from the hill.
A change from volcanic rock to mud clay.
Resting towards the top of the trail.
At the rim with vents all around.
Tonya at the rim. It was really warm.
We made it to the top.
One of the sulphur vents. Phew!

Playing games with a Sicilian card deck.

Getting on the train for our night trip to Rome.
